One thing you learn quickly when distributing the delicious life-juice of Cheerwine is that if anything is better than ice cold Cheerwine ... well there really isn't anything better than cold Cheerwine. Down here in Charleston, SC we can't hand out enough Cheerwine to you cherry thirsty folks. While sampling Cheerwine in Downtown Charleston we noticed that holding a Cheerwine complimented many shopper's fashion-savvy outfits. On the other hand, even the hard dirty workers look like a million bucks with Cheerwine in their hands. Sam and Matt (our buddies) were actually kidnapped by Northerners. Now Brian and I are on the hunt to find Matt and Sam and hand out Ice COLD Cheerwine (check out our updated profiles).

For the past week we've hit some hot spots and handed out plenty of drinks to thirsty fans. We tackled the Reef-Sweetwater Surf Competition, off of Wrightsville Beach, and the whole UNCW and Wilmington area. I hope you got a cold Cheerwine. Here are some pictures of avid fans, sipping the nectar of the South.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RqkkbpFg_zI/AAAAAAAAAF8/Cm0-YFaQT7g/s320/000_0011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091640911023111986" />

Here are some more shots of us running into PRO surfers dominating the east coast waves.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RqklYZFg_0I/AAAAAAAAAGE/unJtrCUJjDI/s320/000_0014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091641954700164930" />

More highlights from the last weekend of Brian and I include the Raleigh Downtown festival, what a blast. The Cheer-watch Team has been super busy for the past week and we haven't updated yall on how our efforts are going out there. Sorry about that, but there's alot to tell.

When we were in Warrenton, VA we gave out more Cheerwine than we typically do down here in the Carolinas. Way to go Virginia! They know that for a sweet, cherry soft drink they need not venture to another brand that Cheerwine. As we said in our last post, we gave out samples at the Jimmy Buffett concert near Warrenton on June 28. It was awesome. The Parrotheads were as enthusiastic about Cheerwine as they were to wave their fins for Mr. Buffett. Here's some shots of the day (Yes, day. The tailgaters for the show began cramming in at about NOON!)

Make sure to check out the people filling up their own portable pool as well as our awesome Cheerwine Hawaiian shirts.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RosOwrWQkqI/AAAAAAAAAEs/Eu4z5MPMvBc/s320/DSCN2996.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083172833850331810" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RosOxLWQkrI/AAAAAAAAAE0/nQfipEf0HpM/s320/DSCN2998.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083172842440266418" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RosOxrWQksI/AAAAAAAAAE8/bFv8_n4ac4E/s320/DSCN3005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083172851030201026" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RosOyLWQktI/AAAAAAAAAFE/xZoOEMapkaY/s320/DSCN3008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083172859620135634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RosOy7WQkuI/AAAAAAAAAFM/nfIvVfCajEU/s320/DSCN3009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083172872505037538" />

Earlier this week we landed at Myrtle Beach again to celebrate the 4th of July. We can barely keep the Cheerwine cold! Honestly we ice the stuff down in our Cheer-tracker and then before it even has time to cool we have people mobbing us for a taste of that stuff we lovingly refer to as "the sweetness."

Fear not loyal fans. Not even the thirsty patriots here at Myrtle can deplete the stock of Cheerwine in the area, they just might deplete ours though! Tomorrow should be an awesome day of giving and celebrating. Upon arriving Thursday afternoon, Sam and I wasted no time loading our coolers and hitting the downtown streets in search of more proud Cheerwine fans who would join in the fight to protect your right to drink it. After a few rounds of recruiting on Charleston's main strip, King Street, we thought everything was in place for a weekend of relaxed Cheerwine enjoyment. We were wrong, though. Nothing could have prepared us for the monsoon that was Friday.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RnN2bwdsPGI/AAAAAAAAAC0/wf6HVOIYbAc/s320/100_1066.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076531424214662242" />
As you can see here, this was not the day to find Cheerwine drinkers out on Folly Beach. It is the belief of this investigative reporter that the Yankee Cheerwine hoarders are behind this unsuspected turn of "nature."

Sam and I improvised, however. We made our way to the Tanger Outlet Center just outside of Charleston and continued our search for Cheerwine supporters. After fighting off some feisty northerners, we made promising contact with a kind mid-westerner named Jeff.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RnN2uAdsPHI/AAAAAAAAAC8/kY7E30E1z4E/s320/100_1070.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076531737747274866" />

"We don't have this stuff out in Indiana," Jeff said.
Upon tasting the drink for the first time, Jeff told us that he was going to buy a few cases before returning back home. However, he promised to share with local friends as opposed to keeping it all to himself. We believed him, due in large part to his obvious respect for Cheerwine. Just check out the color of his shirt as proof.

Well, Sam and I have two more busy days ahead of us. Be on the lookout for us tomorrow at Folly Beach. And who knows? If it's another rainy one, we just might be coming to find you.

From the trenches,
Matt

North Myrtle and Southport

The team moved north after two days in Myrtle Beach to a town with a similar name and similar desire for Cheerwine. On the drive up we began to wonder. Does Cheerwine get watered down? Only an official experiment by the investigative unit in North Myrtle Beach would due for us to find out.

We lined up some cans of Cheerwine and asked passersby to attempt to water them down with some standard issue Cheer-watch Water Pistols. After the cans sustained the impact from the pressured streams, we opened them and tried the sweet goodness inside.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmyx5gdsPBI/AAAAAAAAACM/yZ3T9MRwl_g/s320/DSCN2824.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074626481664834578" />

The verdict: Although the cans were in fact "downed" by using water, the drink did not become "watered down." If they could take such a beating as that, it must be true that Cheerwine can never become watered down in taste--ever.

Today was spent at North Myrtle and Southport, N.C. attempting to discover the effect Cheerwine has on our animal friends.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmyx5wdsPCI/AAAAAAAAACU/LhSqjWotSHI/s320/DSCN2831.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074626485959801890" />

In Southport we came across some fishermen who weren't having the best of luck. We gave them some cans of cold Cheerwine to hopefully lure the gilled guys (or gals) towards the Southport City Pier. I'm not sure if did the trick because the fishermen seemed to enjoy drinking the stuff themselves rather than using it as bait.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmyx6AdsPDI/AAAAAAAAACc/D9LqLAbSGhE/s320/DSCN2832.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074626490254769202" />

On the ferry from Southport to Wilmington we spotted some gulls circling the back of the boat. Both concern lifestyle.

As we first set out protecting people's right to drink, we came across a man who did not go by a conventional first, or last, name.

"Just call me the Red Rider," said Red Rider.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmo0ygdsO9I/AAAAAAAAABs/21UmQgjkcT0/s320/100_1061-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073925972498856914" />

You'll notice the red sticker on the front of Rider's helmet, an addition by the investigative team which he gladly accepted.

Rider lives in Myrtle Beach and confessed to using his iron steed to speed Cheerwine wherever he pleases, and then immediately consume it. He did not seem to pose a threat as a hoarder due to his choice of digs on the Carolina coast, but since Rider is a biker it could be logical to assume that all bikers enjoy the refreshing taste of cold red can. This would undoubtedly apply to bikers from the north. Motorcycles could in fact be the perfect getaway vehicle for one twelve pack... OR EVERN TWO!

The other group which we found to be the most fanatic about snagging some soda were construction workers. The Cheertracker 1 news vehicle was stormed as we pulled to a stop outside a site along the water. With our coolers empty, we retreated to a gas station to restock on ice. Luckily a hidden compartment in the van protected our waning supply of drink.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmo0ywdsO-I/AAAAAAAAAB0/XJxeFMWvqNo/s320/DSCN2820.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073925976793824226" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmo0zQdsO_I/AAAAAAAAAB8/UkaagIxT7ZI/s320/DSCN2823.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073925985383758834" />

From the trenches,

Sam

---------------------------------------------------------

NEWSFLASH

---------------------------------------------------------

In our investigations today a can of Cheerwine was misplaced. When stopped at a local car-wash, Sam and I made a friend with the manager named Aaron who, in exchange for a case of the good stuff, let us use free water in our cleaning struggle. Aaron, who sees a lot of license plates every day, agreed that the Yankee penetration into Cheerwine territory is worsening as the summer progresses.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/RmjkEAdsO6I/AAAAAAAAABU/aKSRKfJ7FR4/s320/100_1051.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073555737728007074" />

Later in the day, we met a Cheerwine crusading couple from Nashville, Nathan and Carla James. Sam caught two ladies from Cincinatti breaking into the Cheertracker, trying to steal cases of the Cherry Different Soda. Thanks to some quick picture-taking, these ladies won't be escaping from the law for too long.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rmjk3gdsO8I/AAAAAAAAABk/gF-sn5N_khk/s320/100_1056.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073556622491270082" />

All in all, it was a good day for the Investigative Reporting Team. After conducting some extensive interrogations up and down the beach, startling news that had previously been only a rumor was finally confirmed: greedy Yankees are in fact hoarding our Cheerwine.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rl0SJpWMjXI/AAAAAAAAAA8/ZEmXNdeyMGw/s320/100_1049.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070228712416120178" />

As you can see here, these rough guys from Boston have sunken their clam chowder-loving teeth into some of our tasty Cheerwine, and they don't look to be giving it up all too easily. Just look at the intimidating look on the tall bodyguard's face in the background.

Luckily, our research led us to a published expert on both Cheerwine and the threat posed by Yankee hoarders. Kathleen, the cherry guru seen analyzing the Cherry Different Soda with me on the beach below, has conducted her own studies into the southern uniqueness of Cheerwine at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Referencing previous data collected by the Cheerwine sampling team of last summer, Kathleen stated, "The threat of Cheerwine depletion due to the greediness of northerners is very real and very scary."

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XLreOaALy_Y/Rl0WcJWMjYI/AAAAAAAAABE/0z8ujvQ_D9c/s320/100_1048.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070233428290211202" />

At this point, no viable solution seems to be in sight. The Cheerwatch News Team's investigative reporting unit, headed by Matt and myself, came across some folks from Marion, Indiana Friday and they all approached us with similar questions.
"Do you know Tyler Hansbrough?" asked a few of the wide-eyed Hoosiers.
"Is it true that Tyler Hansbrough drank five cases of Cheerwine without burping?" asked others.
One thing is for sure, midwesterners have a love for their fellow midwestern brother. Another thing, when given some free Cheerwine, immediate suspicion was rasied that these basketball fans might be tempted to steal and consequently hoard Cheerwine on their way back to Indiana. They loved the stuff.

Cheerwine also defeated the Yankee competition in cycling this week. The Cheerwine Pro Women's Cycling Team won the Raleigh Downtown Criterium Friday in front of a rowdy crowd. Had the mayor of Raleigh decided to do so, he could have declared it city-wide Cheerwine day and then said:
"May 25 from this day forward will be recognized as Cheerwine Day in Raleigh."
Of course this didn't actually happen but the news team determined that such an act would have, in fact, been awesome.

Technical difficulties resulted and pictures are now unavailable. Check back later for some shots of investigative reporting that will make your mouth water.

gearin' up

Hey guys,

Sorry we haven't been keeping you posted on the most regular basis. Right about now I'm sure Zach is knee-deep in exams because I know Steve and I are right now here in Barca. When I get home I'll try and put up some more pics from our travels and get ya some updates on the RAOS team. We're already gearin' up for this summer so go ahead and start checking back from time to time. Hope everyone has a great holiday season.

Sam

P.S. Before we go I want to let you all know that this blog would not have continued if we didn't have the support and encouragement of our fans. This blog had alot more to offer than talk about Cheerwine, each person that visited got a taste of what each of us are like, what adventures we ran into and what type of awesome people we met. So before we leave heres what we will be doing in the "off-season".

For myself, Zach, I will be heading back up to Boone-town aka Boone. I've gotta start up my sophmore year and I can't wait. I will be studying finance and skiing, as I have one class that is nothing but skiing. Boone its a great place. I'll be checking up on this site and will make a few posts and respond to question and what not, if anyone is ever in the boone area don't hesitate to let me know. Take care, thanks for a great summer.

Hello everyone, its me, Steve, it's been a while since i've blogged but it looks like nothing has changed. Seems like Zach and Sam had alot of fun and well I know they did because Sam told me. Next year I am going to be studying in Barcelona, Spain. I know, awesome. I know some spanish so it should be fun living in an over-seas country. Everyone have a good rest of the summer and don't hesitate to contact me.

Everyone Hello, it is me SAM. I am excited to be here talking to everyone because you all really did make my summer great, and well traveling to different beaches helped too. Next year my plans are the same, I will be rooming with Steve in Barcelona Spain. I can't wait, i'll be back here to provide pictures of Spain and see if I can't give some spanish a cold drink. Thanks again, and check back.

Sunday and Monday we had a good time discovering Charleston. We ran across a huge group of students in a group called SPECTRA who took classes at C of C during the summer. We had perfect timing in the heat.

We stopped in a really packed bar on King St. to watch the World Cup Final. Awesome.

Before we left the area we went back to Folley Beach and then paid a visit to one of our bottlers that has helped us out along the way. We got down in the late afternoon and headed to one of the nicest areas, King Street. We found plenty of shoppers and thirsty people. It was such a chill day, everyone was having fun and relaxing. We started off the day at one of the places that we had a lot of fun at, Wrightsville Beach. The only problem we ran into was the parking, it was non-existent. So we just illegally parked up front by the pier and sampled from "Red". No problems came, officers even came by just to get a free Cheerwine. Here are some thirsty fans. Thanks for following us and look for us in a familiar spot this weekend. In celebration of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday; the streets were slammed with hundreds of hot and thirsty visitors. "Red" came to the rescue with a van loaded down with ice-cold Cheerwine. Music and contest added to the festivities. Zack decided to include Cheerwine by participating in a hot dog eating contest. Needless to say he didn't top the winner who gobbled down an amazing 13!

After watching Zack I decided to enter Cheerwine in The Oscar Meyer wiener commercial singing contest. "Ole' I wish I was an Oscar Meyer wiener..." Was concluded with "drink Cheerwine." Our first stop was on the north end of Carolina Beach. If you've never been there you have to take a four-wheel drive to get across. For that reason we had to give ole' "Red" a break. We jumped in the back of the truck and made our getaway down the stretch which was jam-packed with hundreds of people from all across the states.

Picture above:Now that's a four-wheel drive!

After checking out the beach we hit the streets in downtown Wilmington. However, we still managed to find everyone and insure that cold Cheerwine was in everyones hands.

We started the day by hitting up the local mall, given that it was raining we had no problems finding people that loved Cheerwine.

We then made a quick dash between showers to find people at Broadway at the beach, Broadway at the Beach is an amazing place if you've never been there. We poured a Cheerwine in one of them and even got a few people to slide right into a pool of it and some water. Here's some of our sliders.

Who are those last two guys anyway?

After we manned the slides for a while(and cleaned the sand off of us by taking an extended swim in the ocean) we started combing the beach and meeting people. We could barely keep our coolers stocked we were givin it out so fast. It's so easy to meet peopel when your giving out free stuff.

We be out tomorrow again in the area. We started our adventure in the heart of the city, where we knew we'd find the craziest and most fun people, the strip at Myrtle Beach. We quickly realized that everyone around us was our age and everyone was having a good time. To continue those good times we set up our table and had a little game of "Cheer-Pong". (Cheer-pong is a simple game of tossing a ping-pong ball in the other teams cup. If you make it the other team has to drink their cheerwine, first team to loose all their cups looses.)

Above: Some young ladies decided to take a break from the heat and enjoy a cold cheerwine,

Below: A first time Cheerwine drinker enjoys his drink and a game too.

All day was a party on the beach, people were flooding us, hanging out to chill, and just having a good time. Like always we had many request for Cheerwine in states far away, and to those people, we're coming.

Above: Some crazy guys found our stand and played in a few games of Cheer-Pong, they were from the ATL, and after tasting it demanded its presence.

Above: Me and some awesome ladies from OHIO, and thats ME, Zach, so everyone knows.

Many cool people roamed the beach today, everyone we talked to were friendly, everyone was down to earth, and everyone was definitely having a good time. There wasn't a sign but we managed to stumble across it after a while on Highway 17. I think it must be a vacationer's beach because we met a lot of people that were from out of town. We're gonna be giving out t-shirts to the people that get on the blog. If you see your picture up here just email us with your address and we'll get it to you. In the morning we spent a little time around Davidson College. We met some people from Virginia walking through the campus that had never tried Cheerwine before. They wanted our "why zig?" shirts really badly but luckily, we resisted. Can't give out Cheerwine without a shirt, it's the law.

After we were on campus for a bit we hit up some boat landings around Lake Norman. We tried to get on the Catawba Queen, but as you can see in the picture, they do not allow food or beverage, foolish if you ask me.

Unphased, we went to see what we could find in Mooresville. Our answer: Racing!.

We spent some time in Mooresville but couldnt find the elusive statue of Dale Earnhardt that I know is somewhere around there. Really wanted that picture. Anyway we started to look for parks along the way home where people might be having a Father's Day picnic. We found just that at Sloan Park where we also visited a museum inside a mill.

We went to some other parks around Salisbury before turning in. Check for us in the general vicinity of where we were during our first week out. That's where we're gonna be next. Zach will be riding with me next week, but Steve will be in the area gettin his grill on!

--Sam

Goodnight and Goodluck

Yesterday was another day in Charlotte for the R.A.O.S. team. If you were looking for "freedom" after Sam's hint, than you might not have found us. Our plan was to spend most of the day at Freedom Park but unfortunately one of the park's officers found us out in about 10 minutes and gave us the boot. Apparently, he wasn't someone who could be easily persuaded with some Cheerwine. We did get a couple good shots at the park and saw some pretty cool things, like a lady with her dog who told us that he was ranked 8th in the world in frisbee competition.

During our lunch break, we went to a sports bar called Picasso's to catch the end of the U.S. soccer match. It was a pretty cool place and everyone was real intense because of the game so we thought about doing a little sampling there. We offered the manager a free case if she allowed us to give some out inside and if she'd make a drink special with Cheerwine. She was all for it. My favorite part of the whole thing was that once we started handing out cold CW inside, someone came up to me and asked if we had been in Greenville last week. I was just pretty psyched to hear that we'd been spotted by someone two weeks in a row in two different states.

And now for the bad news. After our day in Lake Norman on Sunday, my run with the R.A.O.S. team will come to an end. I'm still working for the company next week in Myrtle Beach for the "Thriller on the Griller" events but this will unfortunately be my last blog. I know, I know, how could this happen right? But it's ok. Zach, who will be the new member to work with Sam is a great guy and you'll like him a lot. He's always got a lot of creative ideas so I'm sure the team will find a lot of new and fun things to do to finish out the summer. Anyways, goodbye to all you great fans out there who have kept my job fun, always making me want to check out our site to see who said what to us, and goodluck to Sam and Zach. I'll keep up with these guys from home back in New York and make sure to post some comments so I don't lose touch. Keep Zaggin'

Steve

P.S. We're staying at my house in Salisbury this weekend so we took off down Hwy 150 towards Mooresville. Before we got 10 minutes down the road, I remembered a place that I used to see on Miller Road, Ed's Carp Lake. I'd never actually been here, only seen it on the road, so it was exciting to meet the Ed. When we got there Ed was getting restocked with "carp juice" in his shop.(it's used for bait) For the record Cheerwine tastes a LOT better than carp juice.

We were also being followed by a reporter and photographer from the Salisbury Post(That's who took our picture with Ed). The reporter told us her son was in a day camp in nearby China Grove. Steve and I pretty much go wherever seems interesting at the time, and day camp definitely seemed like the place to go after Ed's. Here's the reporting crew.

After we went to day camp and gave all the kids a Cheerwine we saw another group of kids walking around a church in China Grove. We stopped and gave them all drinks. One kid asked what the coozie(sp?) Steve had in his hand was for so he said "it keeps your drink cold." Apparently that was the code phrase for "I'll take each of your Cheerwines and put it in the coozie then pull it out and give it back to you." Here's a shot of Steve giving all the kids an extra boost of cold with the coozie.

We finally got back to Hwy 150 but only made it a short way down the road again before we stopped. The Lazy 5 Ranch was too much to pass up. They let us in for free, probably because we're so dashing, and we gave out a ton of sodas to parkgoers and day camp groups. We also got to do the drive-through the ranch where you get to feed animals from your car! Or in our case Red.

Maybe it was just camera trouble or maybe we were too busy gawking at what was happening, but during our drive-through a zebra stuck its head basicallly in my lap and a giraffe licked Red's roof. Even our van tastes good.

After a long time at the Lazy 5 we finally got back on the highway towards Lake Norman. We sampled in Lake Norman State Park and some boat landings around the lake before heading home for the day. There was a cool "beach" area for swimming at the park.

On Saturday we'll be in the Queen City area. Follow us. Follow us to freedom.

-Sam

Kings of the Road

So you all have good reason to call us lazy bloggers this weekend. We know we've been slow on this one. You'd think it would be the beach that would slow us down, but it looks like it's actually the comforts of Sam's home, where we're staying this weekend, that have relaxed us so much. Anyway, better late than never, right?

After a quick lunch chat with the bosses at our Salisbury HQ, the kings of the road set out for Hickory, NC. And the royalty thing I just mentioned is clearly no joke. Sam's throne below proves that it has gotta be official. And for those of you who don't know Sam: it takes a pretty big chair for his feet to not reach the ground.

We found lots to do to keep us busy for the few hours we were in town. As we walked the Hickory streets, people in need of cold Cheerwine seemed to find us. We came across a big church group field trip to a local theater who took some for the road,

some men at work on the second story who were calling me for awhile from above until I finally realized where it was coming from,

and even a birthday party which we added some extra presents to. I bet you can guess what our thoughtful gift to her was.

We even came across something we had never seen or heard about. A CW racing team trailer? I know we should probably know more than you all about this stuff but since we're in the dark on this one, does anybody know if we've got a car or something?

If you do, let us know. Anyway, time for us to get back on the road. He wasn't quite living up to his "zaggin' wagon" standards of cleanliness(zaggin' wagon phrase coined by Steve). We went through an automatic washer where the standard wash costs $4. I have to admit, I threw in the extra dollar for the Superwash. Anyway with a clean van we headed south to Spartanburg, S.S. We stopped in a few parking lots but were having trouble finding Cheerwine drinkers so we packed up ready to stop at random places along the road home to Chapel Hill. Here we are searching.

After passing countless peach stands and fireworks stores we finally stopped at a rest area near Concord to give some Cheerwine to some travelers.

We then made a stop in Salisbury to maybe find some more people to sample and to stop by my house and see my family. My brother is graduating high school on Wednesday so Red may be in the area around that time this week. There was a blood drive going on at a church near my house so we stopped in and donated some Cheerwine for the donors. Their bodies just lost some red liquid so we gave them some to put back inside.

We needed some gas so we made another stop at one of my favorite landmarks on I-85, Bill's Truck Stop. Here's a picture of me and Bill.

I think Bill might have given us a bit of luck, because a perfect pump awaited us when we returned from taking that last picture. We had left the gas pump running and it stopped automatically on $50. Take that Jerry Seinfeld!

A woman at Bill's recognized us from an article in the Salisbury Post, very cool.

Like I said before, I have to go home to see my bro graduate. So look for us around that area later this week. Go USA men's soccer! There were a bunch of great things to see in the city, including a lot of fountains like the one at the beginning. We were handing out a ton of CW and as we walked we discovered some new hot spots and were given some tips about a few others. One of my favorites that we came across was Falls Park, a really sweet park with a lot of, well, waterfalls. The coolest thing was that it was right in the middle of the city. Here are a great view of an old tree's roots and of the "dog whisperer": a guy who entertained everybody's dogs around the base of one of the falls.

</a

After a quick break in town to watch some World Cup action we went to do some re-icing and found a church outside having a food/bake sale. We thought we'd offered up some Cheerwine for them to sell. They were so grateful and so willing to get together for a picture that we just have to say thanks to Victory Temple Church. It definitely helped make our day.

</a

Good karma found us again in the same parking lot. Someone handed Sam a flyer for the Highland Games Scottish Festival going on at Furman University and off we went. It cost a little bit of money but a couple Cheerwine for the ticket ladies seemed to be enough for a free pass. Unfortunately we missed the games part but the whole thing was still an awesome experience. Gotta love the outfits.

The pictures here weren't even enough to show you all the stuff we did and all the small town girls and city boys we met but it'll have to do for now. We picked just the right spot because today was Vidalia Onion Day. The manager of the market told us that our Cheerwine would go nicely with the free onion rings he was giving out so we set up a table right across from the onion fryer. Here's Steve at our table with a shot of our spot opposing the onion table.

Not only were they giving out free, fresh onion rings, but they were raffling off sacks of potatoes. The staff even gave us ten pounds of onions. It was a hard place to leave.

Its the onions making me do that. Really. Anyway we left the market and headed to a plant to restock Red with Cheerwine. On the way, we drove our 2000th mile of the summer. Not bad.

In the same area as the farmer's market we found the NC Arboretum. To call it a nice garden is an understatement. We gave some Cheerwine to the people we saw as we walked around the grounds.

We finished off by hitting up a couple of random parking lots on the ride in. We were both pretty unfamiliar with the downtown so we parked at the first spot we saw and headed out, full coolers (which everybody keeps asking us to give them) in hand. It ended up being a pretty central spot so we got to see a lot of the city. Just about right away we were waved down by a man outside a on old, vintage movie theater that showed mostly indie flicks. He recognized the logo on our shirts and called us over for the first CW he's had in years. It worked out great for us seeing as he volunteered to trade us some free popcorn for it. An offer that's pretty hard to refuse.

In town, we stopped and hung out at a couple of the interesting spots. Here, all I did was follow the footprints leading to me to these thirsty swine. I know we don't have the biggest fan base of pig statues but we don't discriminate at Cheerwine.

We were passing the bench below when Sam spotted this hat and cane and decided he wasn't going to leave until that man came back for his things and was given a cold Cheerwine. Probably wasn't Sam's best call considering they were made out of what we figured was bronze after checking 'em out. Nice one Sam.

We stopped at a local go cart track and spoke to the owner for awhile. He gave us a tip for our next sampling spot. He pointed us in the direction of a hotel where there were many bikers staying for this weekend's rally. He told us to remember that bikers were good people who took care of you if you took care of them. Sounded good to us, so we drove down the road and found them. We gave out a bunch there but not as much as we might have if it wasn't so late and most hadn't already moved on to their beer.

I figured I'd throw that second picture in there because Sam and I really dig the Harley's. On a whim, we decided to go to a town called Goose Creek because we saw a sign and liked the name. We found City Hall and went inside. The staff were about to eat lunch so we thought we'd just give them some sodas and leave, but much to our surprise, they invited us to join them for lunch. The mayor was out of the office because he also serves as the principal to one of the schools in Goose Creek. In case you were wondering how the town got its name, check out the picture.

After that we headed up a backroad until we finally found I-95. Not far north was a state park in Santee. We found some thirsty campers and tons of bugs. Here's a few of them and my attempt at cool photography using the side mirror.

After the campground it was back to I-95 for a while until we saw the exit for Latta, SC. Fellow UNC fans might understand why this town was significant to us. It's where Raymond Felton, former point guard for the Tar Heels, grew up. We found his high school and some men working in the back. After we gave them some drinks we casually mentioned that we were there because we knew Felton went there. Apparently that's all we had to say. We were then taken inside to see his retired jersey and awards. One of the guys stayed around and talked to us for quite a while and we gave some drinks to some of the girl's basketball team and some cheerleaders.

We finally got home in the evening and I'll speak for Steve and say we were both worn out after another five day weekend. We crossed this really cool suspension bridge from downtown Charleston where we were staying to the Mt. Pleasant/ Isle of Palms area. The place is pretty nice. Great beaches, lots of families and a pretty friendly little beach town to hang out.

Unfortunately after a little while doing some great sampling on the beach...we got busted. Turns out we needed a business permit to be giving out any product on the island. We didn't have one and we sure don't have the $500 a piece that the tickets would have costed us. The two young officers reluctantly had to tell us to stop despite the fact that you could tell they loved the idea of free Cheerwine on the beach. Just check out their smiles.
It was really too bad because after that, we couldn't come up with anything to do for awhile so we had to settle on bummin' on the beach for awhile. Anyway, I'm writing from the library at College of Charleston which our friend attends. Yesterday we went to Folley Beach and it looked like we wouldn't get the chance to meet many people because of the weather. Persistence paid off though and we found some guys who were in a band and really loved Cheerwine. Here's the guitarist and drummer.

We hadn't found many other people on the beach at that point so we packed up and decided to just try the other end of the island just to make sure there weren't some beachgoers we hadn't seen yet. We were right. As we drove Red towards the other end tons of cars started appearing on the side of the road. Turns out there was a surfing competitoin for girls called Wahini going on. I know, I know. It's a tough job.

On down the beach we met these three ladies from Colorado, Ohio and California, all of which had never tried Cheerwine. It got a rousing response from all three. Perhaps it was to remember their first Cheerwine experience but they wanted to take a picture of Steve and I flexing our muscles. We let them. Man, REALLY tough job.

After we left the area around the surfing competition, we drove Red around with a cooler in the front with us. We drove along the strip of road next to the beach accesses and caught lots of people who were either going to or leaving the beach. One woman even said she had forgotten her drinks at home and we had saved the day. That translates to "we were heroes" in my book. Even if just for one day. Before turning in we gave Red another bath because he had mudstreaks on him from a huge puddle on Folley. Today we're going to another island but this one will have more "Palms." Even with all the sampling we'll be doing, I think this should be enough to satisfy our Chucktown faithfuls. Right away, I loved it. The old buildings, the Palmetto trees, the beaches, the restaurants and all the good people that contribute to the city's vibe have been making for a real good weekend. One of the first people we ran into in town was a local bicycle police officer who gladly accepted a Cheerwine and even had a coozy handy to drink it with. He was also happy to give us all his information so that Cheerwine could contact him about all the good stuff we've got going on this Summer. This was in the middle of the fantastic campus of the College of Charleston where we also happened to find a dorm of the same name as the one Sam and I lived in last year at UNC.

We walked around town, mostly on King St. and the Piccolo Spoleto arts, crafts and food etc. fair that's been going on downtown until we retired, exhausted, for the day. Before we left Chapel Hill for Raleigh we stopped at a sporting goods store to get some Carolina Hurricanes flags for Red. The colors matched very nicely.

Since neither Steve nor I had much of an idea where to go in Raleigh, we headed towards downtown. We stopped at a park and found a fireman who looked really parched, in fact, he looked like he hadn't had a drink in years.

Right nextdoor to the park was the Raleigh newspaper. We headed over there but apparently "the newsroom cannot accept any donations." I guess thats an O.K. policy for a media outlet, but really, who could turn down a cold Cheerwine on a hot day--this is coming from a journalism major.

After that we moved Red and started walking around and found a man dancing to a band on a street corner. We handed him a drink and he didn't even miss a beat.

We also ran in to some mounted cops who were Hurricane/Cheerwine fans themselves. The horse's name is Flash, a name which I am partial to because its my dog's name. I love my dog so I thought he deserved to be on here too.

j

We made our way over to N.C. State and drove around and through the campus a bit, stopping once or twice to hit some of the many construction sites. We ended up going out a road that led us to a brand new park. We grabbed our flags and filled up a backpack cooler of Cheerwines. We met some folks fishing and some on the trail. Here's a picture of me and Corey taking a drink break.

We drove around town more and stopped at a few parks including one called Pullen Park that had a small train that's track went all over the park. We came back to Chapel Hill to get some rest before a long drive tomorrow. (Canes were up 3-2 whe I wrote this.)

--Sam

Change of plans

Tommorw, instead of going down south, we're going to spend the day in 'Canes country for game 7. Our day on Long Beach, Oak Island was a little shorter than the past couple days to make up for the ride home. Short maybe, but no less exciting. We started out making a wrong turn and ended up on the opposite end of the island. As it turned out, this wasn't a problem at all. We found a really cool lighthouse and some laid back beaches full of the thirsty CW drinkers that make our job even more fun and easy. Here are just a couple of them, who happen to own a few really great and all very different dogs.

During one of our midday stops for ice we noticed a fellow sampling van and decided to park next to it and take a picture for all the fans out there to decide who outdid who. I'm pretty sure I know what you're going to say.

If I had to pick, I'd say the highlight of our day was the ferry from Southport to Pleasure Island and its loading dock. Sam and I figured Red deserved a break and that the ferry was the perfect way to give it to him. We sampled a bunch and played the best of the best beach tunes while we all waited to board. Everyone there was in great spirits which made the whole experience a blast. We even made friends with the friendly and hospitable ferry crew.

The first weekend for the R.A.O.S. team was a huge success. We had to cross a one lane wooden bridge to get there and we immediately drove around looking for a place to get to the beach. Sunset Beach is on a small island so we explored it fairly extensively. We got to the very end of the island and were about to turn around when we spotted a man down the street using a leaf blower on his driveway. Since we were already down that way we decided to give him a drink. Turns out the man, Vernon, lives in Salisbury and was friends with the Peeler family that founded Cheerwine! We shot the breeze with him for a while and he told us where we could park and head to the beach. Here's a picture of Vernon.

The word of the day at the beach was "awesome." It was by far the most popular response from people we met on the beach. Some of the people that helped establish this as the word of the day were in this family which we decided we would call our "family of the day" because of how many times we saw them and chatted.

This kid made an aligator out of sand all by himself.

To top it all off, I met some folks from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where my mom is from. And they even KNEW MY MOM. For the second time today the world seemed really small. We had met Vernon earlier in the morning, and now people that knew my mom and grandparents. Here's Dan and his wife.

After lunch we went back to the area around Ocean Isle and saw some firefighters washing vehicles outside of the station. We didn't even need to ask them to pose for us, they were just naturals (I'm not so sure about the dad though).

These are some of our other new friends from today's travels. Baby Luke is a born Cheerwine fan who doesn't care at all that he gets almost as much in his mouth as he does on his body. He did sampling just like us for part of his 43 year career at Pepsi.

That’s about all for today, but come and find Sam and I tomorrow as we drive our van, “Red,” to Sunset Beach, NC. See how he's not even sad about it.

Steve and I will be driving the R.A.O.S. van around until then. Today we were around North Myrtle Beach. Almost the first thing we saw when we got to the city was a Cheerwine truck stopped at a gas station. We decided to pull over and meet whoever was driving it. It turned out to be this nice guy named Chester from Charlotte. We talked for a while and gave him a Cheerwine for the road.

We drove down a small backroad and ended up at an Animal Shelter where some women were gardening outside. They appreciated the cold drinks we gave them a lot and told us to go inside. When we got in there were animals all over the place. We met Sasha the dog and Mean Patches the cat. I guess there is also a nice Patches somewhere.

Just down the street from the animal shelter was a practice building for a local fire department. We helped them take a break by giving them some Cheerwines taking a few pictures.

We left and tried to find the mayor of the city. She wasn't at town hall but everyone else working there enjoyed getting some Cheerwine. There were quite a few people inside who had never tried it before.
Neither of us had even seen the beach since we got here so that seemed like the next logical place to find thirsty people. We walked on the beach and then to a fishing pier where we found a group of fishermen who had never tried Cheerwine before. One of the guys, who was from Ohio, immediately began asking us where he could buy a cases of Diet Cheerwine to take home.

It was a good day for meeting people.
